1). Record the game using FRAPs or one of the free alternatives (linked below). This recorded video will be uncompressed and HUGE, usually in 4GB segments. Recommend recording on an external 1TB + ext hard drive.

2). Download and install free xvid codec and virtual dub (linked below). xvid allows compression in mpeg 4 format and virtualdub allows you to append all segments together into one file (one video).

3). Launch VirtualDub ... open the 1st segment of video files. Then File | append avi segment (to each video segment, in order).

4). Once all files are joined together, select 'video' (menu option) | compression | select xvid Mpeg 4 compression.

5). File menu | select save avi as ... (name whatever you want AND SAVE TO A DIF HARD DRIVE .. not the same drive you are encoding from .. save time and wear on drive).

Virtualdub will begin creating the video. 40GB uncompressed video can be compressed using xvid (mpeg4) to 1.2GB (in about 35 min on my Core 2 Duo w/ 4GB RAM). Virtual dub will join all files together, and uses the xvid codec (if selected) to compress the video.

My prior videos could only be set max to 720P because I recorded the game on a 19" monitor at max 1440x900 reso (which was enough to allow 720P -but the video was streched a bit). I want perfection and 1080P (1920x1080)!! Using BZ2 as test with game & desktop resolution set to 1080P onto a 32" HDTV, I recorded via FRAPS .. and used free VirtualDub AND xvid mpeg 4 codec (config to 1080P) to compress before uploading to youtube (3.4GB uncompressed file made v/ Fraps (with highest settings), compressed to 60MB then upload to youtube). THEN - last but not least you want to add: yt:quality=high under 'tags:' | info and settings in your youtube account for each video. When streaming video, you can now up the resolution to 1080P (at expense of larger file/processing/upload/bandwidth costs).
http://fraps.com/ (not free, unfortunately limits to recording resolution to the max your monitor can support, uncompressed recording)
BEST FREE ALTERNATIVE TO FRAPS - MSI Afterburner (all free)
http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html open source xvid mpeg-4 codec - handles the compression)
http://virtualdub.org/ (free open source video editor that will use the xvid codec)
